What You'll Need

A soft fabric measuring tape. You can do this on your own, but having someone help makes it easier to keep the tape snug and level.

You want the tape snug: not so tight it's cutting off circulation, but firm enough that you're measuring where the wig will actually sit. Keep in mind that wigs, like a good pair of jeans, give a little over time. Measure snug.

Step 1: Head Circumference

Place the measuring tape at the centre of your forehead, just above your eyebrows. Wrap it around your head, following your natural hairline, behind your ears, and around the nape of your neck.

Bring the tape back to the starting point and note the measurement. The tape should feel snug but not tight — firm enough that a wig would sit securely, but not so tight it leaves a mark.

Step 2: Front to Back

This measurement tells us the cap length — how long the wig needs to be from your hairline to your nape. Cap length directly affects whether the wig sits on your ears (too long) or bunches at the back when you style it away from your face (too short).

To measure: Start at your front hairline or where you would like the wig to begin. If you have bio hair you plan to leave out at the front, position the tape accordingly. Run the tape straight over the top of your head down to the nape of your neck: the natural hairline at the base of your skull, where your neck begins.

Step 3: Side to side

This measurement tells us how wide the wig needs to be across the front — important for making sure the hairline sits naturally and the wig does not pull or gap at the temples.
