Look Good Feel Better: Free Support for Canadians Going Through Cancer Treatment
If someone you love is going through cancer treatment right now, this post is for them. Please share it.
I've been volunteering with Look Good Feel Better for a couple of years now, and it's one of the things I feel most strongly about pointing people toward. I've seen firsthand what happens when someone walking through one of the hardest seasons of their life gets handed a room full of people who actually understand what they're going through. That's what Look Good Feel Better does. And yet most people have never heard of it.
What Is Look Good Feel Better?
Look Good Feel Better is Canada's only national charitable program dedicated to helping people manage the appearance-related and emotional effects of cancer and its treatment. The workshops are completely free, no referral needed. You can find the closest workshop near you here.
In 2025 alone, 776 workshops were delivered in-person and online across Canada. 96% of participants said they would recommend the program to someone else facing cancer.
What Happens at a Workshop?
There are several workshop types available depending on where someone is in their journey. All of them are free. All of them are led by volunteers who are there because they want to be.
Wigs and Scarves Workshop
This is the workshop I volunteer at, and it's the one closest to my heart.
The session covers everything someone facing treatment-related hair loss actually needs to know: caring for your scalp during and after treatment, what to expect with hair regrowth, the difference between synthetic and human hair, how to choose the right wig, and scarf-tying techniques so you always have options.
What I love most about it is the room itself. You'll be part of a small group where you can ask questions, listen, or just take it all in at your own pace. No pressure to participate. No judgment. Just people who understand what you're going through, and volunteers who are there because they genuinely want to help.
The workshop is available both online (one hour via Zoom) and in-person at select locations across Canada. The in-person session runs two hours and combines the Wigs and Scarves content with the Skincare and Makeup workshop in a single session.
This workshop is open to anyone who is about to start cancer treatment, is currently in treatment, or has completed treatment in the last 12 months.

Skincare and Makeup Workshop
Chemotherapy and radiation change the skin in ways most people aren't prepared for. This workshop gives participants practical tools and techniques to manage those changes and feel more like themselves again.
Additional Workshops Available
Look Good Feel Better offers support well beyond wigs and skincare. Additional workshops cover style and clothing, advanced skincare, post-treatment nutrition, sexual wellbeing, and dedicated support for teens navigating cancer. All workshops are available online, with select in-person locations across Canada.
Why This Matters More Than People Realize
Hair loss during cancer treatment is one of the most visible and emotionally difficult side effects a person can face. It's not vanity. It's identity. It's looking in the mirror and not recognizing yourself at a moment when you're already fighting hard enough.
One thing I hear from participants again and again is that being able to do something tangible, something that helps them feel like themselves, makes an enormous difference when so many other things feel completely out of their control. It takes one thing off the table when there are so many other fears to carry.
That's exactly why I volunteer. And it's exactly why I wanted to write this post.
In my work at JE Salon Wigs, I meet women at every stage of the hair loss journey. Some find me during treatment. Some find me after. Some find me years later, still carrying the weight of what they went through. What I know for certain is that the earlier someone gets connected to the right support, the less alone they feel through all of it.
Look Good Feel Better is part of that support system. And it's free.

If You're in Calgary, Edmonton, or Nearby
If you or someone you know is going through treatment in Alberta, please share this post with them. These resources exist for exactly this moment, and too many people go through treatment without ever knowing they're available.
And if you need more personalized support around wigs or hair pieces during or after treatment, I'm here for that too. A consultation with me is always pressure-free. We go at whatever pace feels right. Whether you end up purchasing from JE Salon Wigs or not, I want you to walk away with the information and confidence you need to make the right decision for yourself.
